EA Consulting

Our methods focus on the complete enterprise as a single entity with integrated and highly capable information systems.  We know how to create infrastructure assets for enterprise systems that deliver high returns and greatly reduce overall enterprise complexity.  This EA consulting begins with significant changes in how data is formed and managed, but extends to process, and all aspects of operating and managing a 21st Century enterprise.  Build enterprise capable data and services infrastructure once and leverage repeatedly for any new information systems initiative.  Real data and service assets are reusable for many relevant enterprise systems.

With over 25 years of leading successful Enterprise Architecture centric consulting and Enterprise system implementations, Formation ISE has developed a proven experience base in high value, practical and “best investment” Enterprise Architecture.   This is 21st Century Information Age architecture for the enterprise that wants to be able to make the right investment and re-investment choices for the long term, and enjoy the many benefits of a strong, asset based infrastructure working for its business.  It begins with data formed not for automation of manual records (the legacy) but with data formed to play an active role in achieving results; enabling enterprise integration and interoperability.

Using pre-defined patterns and meta-models, and tried and true EA practices, we can ensure that your Enterprise Architecture is leveraged and able to deliver full benefits.  The common sense of it is to avoid projects which create enterprise capability problems and limitations, leading to more integration projects and “solutions” and a burgeoning load.  Achieve agility with and through reusable and adaptive assets that sustain quality and integration as the business changes.  Accomplish much more with richer solutions based on higher quality data.  With our methodology you invest in creating enterprise assets with long term value, and matching architecture to the core principles outlined.  Enterprise Data Quality worthy of enabling 21st Century intelligent systems is the number one factor, but there are several others.  Achieve optimized Enterprise capability and integration that pays repeatedly every day for the long term.

SOA is great, but without data quality is garbage-in-garbage-out (GIGO).  SOA with the right architecture is a substantial benefit, but without will add complexity and problems.  Business operational system architecture is nice, but without alignment of the systems with a 21st century enterprise framework, there may be long term added costs and sources of pain with wasteful efforts.  Governance is a good objective, but without services and rules to enforce governance in real time, it is going to be minimally effective.  Governance requires architecture.  Business agility and flexibility is available at a high level, but not without the right data and business work system architectures.  Context and semantic engineering are critical to management and application of rules to any process, but the qualities necessary come from disciplined methodology.  Situational rules with semantic keys enable services to be both intelligent and adaptive.

Intelligent Systems Capabilities – Solutions Architecture

Have a real tough problem or complex capability opportunity?  I love solving information intensive, complex problems with solutions that are intelligent, adaptive, situation sensitive, reliable and generally reusable.  I am not particularly clever (just stubborn) , but I have been successful because I have had a lot of practice (and persistence).  The secret is in combining computer capabilities with human intelligence and accurate, reliable, accessible and relevant data; and guidance.  Patterns have been discovered that can be reapplied.  This is untapped potential that may be used to create competitive advantage.

Having questions about how to create an enterprise wide service asset instead of a problem specific component?  Call me.

Data Warehouse Models

Sometimes with all that disparate data and translation, de-duplication, unbundling, granularity balancing, population accounting, and sometimes fudging that is going on, it is hard to picture what a fully disciplined process and data architecture would look like.  It is much more complex than the “solution tool” vendors portray, with more steps than are normally planned for.  If you are stuck with disparate data, you have to engineer the process and results.  Tools don’t do that for you; they don’t know your particular data issues or quality requirements.
